A Thirty-fifth Wedding Anniversary

Time is too slow for those who wait,

Too swift for those who fear,

Too long for those who grieve,

Too short for those who rejoice,

But for those who love, time is eternity.

--Henry Van Dyke

June 5, 1982  We only thought we loved each other then; we had no idea.

The best way that I can describe the past thirty-five years is by telling you what I want written on my tombstone:

SHE WAS LOVED WELL BY A WONDERFUL MAN

I knew very early in our relationship that Larry cared for me for who I was, not for my appearance or what I projected or what I could morph into to enhance him. This was no insignificant attitude, considering the traditional, male-dominated subculture of our youth. Growing up, I often felt the need to dial back and dumb down, because having excessive drive was not socially acceptable for a conservative Mennonite female. Larry said what drew him to me was my personal strength and capabilities. He has always encouraged me to voice my opinions, try my hardest, and to be whoever I wanted to be. Over the years, what has made him happy and proud is when I am my authentic self. I have been loved unconditionally, just for being me. I have no idea why I have been given such a gift! I hope that I have returned the present, in some small measure. Cheers, Larry, to as many more years together as God gives us breath. You have my heart.
